On the Real Illusions tour Vai is backed by a band he christened The Breed. Providing monster bass and supporting vocals is the legendary Billy Sheehan. Those that know Sheehan only from his radio hits with former band Mr. Big barely have an inkling of what this man is capable of. Vai and Sheehan made two records together with David Lee Roth in the mid 1980s and fans have long salivated at the thought of this collaboration being renewed. With the formation of The Breed, their dreams have come true. Sheehan also performs on the Real Illusions CD and the recent live recordings.

Also in The Breed is Tony Macalpine, who was one of the preeminent guitar players of the late 1980s shred heyday. Those familiar with his solo releases know that he is more than accomplished on both guitar and keyboards. It is in this capacity that her serves in The Breed and is capable of giving Vai a run for his money when playing together. Rounding out the band are Dave Weiner on third guitar and newest member Jeremy Colson on drums. Each musician got their own spotlight solo during the show.
