The new album showcased the band indulging in studio experimentation. They attempted new sounds and textures to mixed results. Special One turned out to be the band's best sounding release in many years. However, its downfall was two-fold: lackluster songwriting and a poor choice of first single. While "Scent Of A Woman" is a solid Who-influenced rocker, it was neither the best nor the most radio-friendly song on the album.
While "Scent Of A Woman" is a solid Who-influenced rocker, it was neither the best nor the most radio-friendly song on the album. "Too Much" may have garnered more radio attention. It also didn't help that the last two tracks on the CD were actually two versions of the same song, the inclusion of just one of which was questionable. Sandwiched between "Scent" and these last two tracks are some solid rockers and ballads in the Cheap Trick style that need time to grow on the listener in order to overcome the inevitable disappointment felt by many fans who couldn't help but unfavorably compare them against the strong 1997 release.
