30th ANNIVERSARY TOUR
The Woodlands, TX
June 19, 2004

Story by Ritchie Champagne

One by one, Alex, Geddy and Neil arrived onstage. They began the show with a seven minute instrumental medley of older Rush songs, one from each of their first seven studio albums. The intro culminated, finally, with a complete performance of The Spirit Of Radio from Permanent Waves (yes, their eighth studio LP). The audience was on their feet from the first note and remained there until the very end (and after, when Jerry Stiller reappeared). Following the medley, the rest of the first set was more or less the average Rush show. By average, I do not mean anything negative. Songs like Roll The Bones, Subdivisions, and YYZ are definite crowd favorites and familiar enough to keep the momentum going for even the most casual fan. The penultimate song in the first set was a cover of The Who's The Seeker, contained on their Feedback EP. After nearly 80 minutes, the length of some bands' entire show, Rush excused themselves for a 20 minute break.
