Fresh
from a European tour opening for former label mates Bright Eyes (with
whom Rilo drummer Jason Boesel sits in), Rilo Kiley
are headlining their own club tour as their audience grows. Thanks to high
profile raves from sources such as musician Elvis Costello, Rolling Stone
and Blender magazine, their star is rising into the mainstream.
The band has signed directly to Warner Brothers Records with whom
they had previously only had a distribution deal for their own label Brute/Beaute.
This has predictably thrown many of the indie kids into fits of trepidation
and uncertainty concerning "their" band.
Originally
a quartet, Rilo Kiley has welcomed guitarist Mike Bloom
into the fold. Originally hired as an auxiliary player, he is now listed
as a band member, adding guitar textures to the mix, helping to fill out
the sound. Pierre DeReeder is more than just the bass player onstage,
handling guitar on two songs and keyboards on another. |
The
band has historically done well in Texas and this stop found fans lined
up outside the venue two hours before the doors open. The mostly youngish
crowd mingled on the sidewalk while, limousines continuously pulled up
outside the restaurant across the street, depositing their loads of tuxedoed
and evening dressed teens going about their prom night festivities. One
group of girls joined the queue, having decided to forego their prom in
order to attend Rilo Kiley’s performance instead. They would
be grandly rewarded for their loyalty later that night. |
