The Solo Years
CD/DVD review by Ritchie Champagne

While his Apple Records solo catalog has remained in print, everything released after he defected to his own Dark Horse label in 1975 has been unavailable for years. Now with the release of The Dark Horse Years boxed set in 2004, with the exception of the two Traveling Wilburys CDs, Harrison's entire discography is available once again. The box contains five studio albums and a two disc live album as well as an exclusive DVD featuring interview and documentary footage and all but one of his videos from the Dark Horse albums. Since many of these videos were released prior to the MTV era, they could be new to even the most seasoned Harrison fan. Even with the unforgivable exclusion of the video for Blow Away (rendering this DVD an incomplete compilation), the footage contained is a welcome addition for Beatle and Harrison collectors alike. However, with a price of $130, it's an unwise investment. One may purchase the individual CDs for about half the cost of the box, leaving the price for the DVD and the box itself at an exorbitant amount. The casual or budget conscious Harrison fan is better served buying the CDs individually. We'll endeavor to provide thumbnail reviews for each of Harrison's albums, slotting the ones included in the box in their respective chronological positions.
