Assuring the crowd that he was joking about playing the Reddy tune, Johnson began playing the familiar intro to Desert Rose. It looked like an unrehearsed decision, seemingly awkward at the start. It was heartbreaking to watch Johnson attempt to sing the choruses. The song features some difficult vocals for Johnson in good health; his throat troubles made them virtually impossible. Perhaps in reaction to this, Johnson pulled out all of the stops on the end solo to the song, stretching it out and improvising to great effect. An audience member not familiar with Eric Johnson music turned to me and asked which album Desert Rose was on because he really liked it.

In addition to tracks from most of his albums, Johnson’s set also included a song from Maresh’s solo CD and a couple of unreleased gems. Five tracks from Bloom found their way into the set: Columbia, 12 To 12 Vibe, Summer Jam, My Back Pages, and Tribute To Jerry Reed. Midway through the set, Johnson introduced SRV, which he wrote in memory of fellow Austin, TX native Stevie Ray Vaughn, only to step back to the mike to announce, “Actually, we’re going to play this other song first.” After an extended improvisational solo, Johnson and Co. kicked into the distinctive intro to the radio hit Cliffs Of Dover. Having garnered much radio airplay when it was released in 1990, most of the audience is familiar with at least this song. A stellar performance over, Johnson said goodnight and left the stage.
