The
2005 Remasters CD review by Ritchie Champagne |

Friend Or Foe was first released in 1982 and scored Adam his first major US success with the single, Goody Two Shoes. One of Adam’s goals in his music career was for each album to sound different from its predecessor, much in the way David Bowie has conducted his career. While previous Ant releases showed noticeable diversity, Friend Or Foe was an unmistakable departure from what had come to be known as Antmusic. Acoustic guitars and a horn section are prevalent on this album and the heaviness of previous records has been toned way back. The MTV and radio hit single Desperate But Not Serious is also featured, as well as a cover of the Doors classic Hello, I Love You. The pristine sound quality on this version of the album is a marked improvement over the previous CD version. |

A dozen bonus tracks included here effectively double the length of the album. Most of the bonuses are demos, some of which are for tracks that never saw the light of day. There’s also the original single version of Goody Two Shoes as well as two completed studio tracks: Coup D’Etat (which was featured in demo form on the 2003 box set, Antbox) and a remake of the pre-Dirk Antz song Good Sex Rumples The Clothing, originally intended for use as a single b-side. While on the subject of b-sides, there were quality tracks released on the singles from Friend Or Foe that would have been perfectly included here (they are available on the 1994 B-Side Babies CD). |
