Spring 2002 Interview by NICK BENSON
for the Swedish magazine THE BROKEN FACE

Damien Youth is an independent singer/songwriter/musician who works in a number of rock sub-genres. He has been a part of various musical projects including The Cosmic Cult Of Adam Strange, Featherbox, Kyte, Magic Island, Surprise Symphony and Walter Ghoul’s Lavender Brigade. He has also recorded with Peter Daltrey of the classic '60s band Kaleidoscope. The common quality in all of Damien Youth’s music is his uncanny understanding of the melodic heart of the song, whether he is working in a British psychedelic vein with WALTER GHOUL’S LAVENDER BRIGADE, '60s influenced folk rock on the solo album SUNFIELD, or glam rock with THE COSMIC CULT OF ADAM STRANGE. Offered the chance of mainstream radio success with FEATHERBOX in the '90s, Youth chose instead to head back to home recording tp preserve his artistic control. With the help of his partner Melody Fair, Damien has been able to integrate his life with his art to an admirable degree. They bought an old hotel in southwestern Pennsylvania and are converting the historic building into an all purpose living/practice/recording/art/ performance space. One of Damien Youth’s intriguing recent releases is the ever changing ONANISMS. No copy of the album is the same as any other copy. The new solo LP A BOX AND A VEIL is due to be released soon. This collection of folk ballads and what he calls “pop fragments” is sure to further Damien Youth’s reputation as a versatile, talented song writer.

BF: When did you start playing music? What was your first instrument?
DY: My father used to play one chord on his old guitar and make up funny songs about our family life. That was my first instrument, my dad’s old guitar. I was about 8 years old. When I was 13 I decided to start a band with my older cousin and sister. I played drums and sang. The band was called Harvest. I got the name from the label Roy Wood was on. I started recording on a giant old Tascam 4-track back in 1984. The first time I doubled my voice I was addicted!!
